Plot
The show stars Shinnosuke Nohara, a five-year-old boy who has a knack for annoying grown-ups, including making crack remarks about his mother's bust size (or lack thereof), lusting after older women, and pulling down his pants and dancing around in public. When he isn't doing things like this, he can likely be found watching Action Kamen on TV, eating Chocobees, playing with "Mr. Elephant" or out with his friends (and annoying them as well).
History
Crayon Shin-chan debuted in Japan on the TV Asahi network on April 13, 1992.
In 1996, TV Asahi began marketing Crayon Shin-chan to international audiences, and partnered with American representative Lacey Productions to commission an English language adaptation, localizing the humor for English speakers, from which other versions would be produced for Latin America and Europe. In 2003, another English dub was produced by Phuuz Entertainment, and hearing that the people at Williams Street were fans of the show (VP of Production Keith Crofford in particular), TV Asahi pitched the series to [adult swim]. The network rejected it, feeling it was more appropriate for kids.
In 2006, FUNimation acquired the North American licensing rights to the series, and a completely new English version was pitched to [adult swim] which catered to older audiences. Despite their hesitation to acquire another comedy anime series after the failure of The Super Milk-chan Show, the network decided to air the first six episodes as a test run for audience reception, and also recommended former Space Ghost Coast to Coast writers Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer to help with the dub script. The test run proved successful enough for them to finally acquire the series, and the first episode of the rest of the new dub's first season premiered in April 2007, though Dorkin and Dyer had since left the series.
The FUNimation dub of the series is considerably more adult-oriented than the original Japanese version, with additional sexual and scatological humor on top of American pop culture references. The characters have also been reworked to fit the new format: Georgie (known in the Japanese version as Kazama) is an ultra-right-wing conservative, while Penny (originally named Nene) comes from an abusive family and Maso (Masao) is rumored to be gay. Action Kamen has also been renamed "Action Bastard".
