Saul of the Mole Men
From Adult Swim Headquarters Wiki
Saul of the Mole Men is a live-action green screen show created by Craig Lewis, staff writer on Cartoon Network's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
The series premiered on [adult swim] in February 2007.
Story
Lowly geologist Saul Malone, an employee of STRATA, a geological organization, is part of the crew of a subterranean drill team which is sent to the center of the Earth for some reason or another. Along the way, an accident occurs which leaves the entire crew dead, save for Saul, a robot with the mind of a cantankerous old man, and clueless British pop star Johnny Tambourine, who accompanied the drill team in a cryogenic tube, also for some reason or another. Now stranded at the center of the Earth, Saul and the others stumble onto an underground society of mole men and accidentally disrupt it, while Saul faces many personal hardships and is involved in something which will change his solitary, friendless life as he knows it.
The show is described as a send-up of 1960's and 70's Saturday morning television, primarily The Banana Splits and shows produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Lewis also credits the classic Doctor Who series and the Planet of the Apes films as inspiration.
The opening theme to the series is performed by South Park co-creator Trey Parker.
