Samurai Champloo is an anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) which fuses rap and hip-hop music with Edo period samurai drama.

The series is licensed by Geneon Entertainment. It premiered on [adult swim] in May 2005.

Plot

Samurai Champloo follows the trials and tribulations of three vagrant travelers: the vagabond Mugen, the ronin Jin, and the mysterious young woman Fuu. When Fuu rescues combatants Mugen and Jin from death at the hands of a corrupt magistrate, the two of them reluctantly agree to travel with her through Japan and help her find a mysterious "samurai who smells like sunflowers".

Mugen

A vagabond swordsman, Mugen was born on a penal colony outside of what was then Japan. He is a vulgar man how is illiterate in the first half of the series. He uses a highly random type of swordsmanship that attempts to confuse his opponant.

Jin

Jin is a wondering ronin who was known for killing his master, who had defeated 1000 warriors. He spent his life training in kenjutsu dojos, and is part of the samurai class. He wears anachronistic glasses and is an extremely skilled swordsman.<p>

Fuu

Fuu is a fifteen year old girl who was brought up without really knowing her father. She works in several places, usually as a waitress, and is an especially big eater. Her mother died before the show began, and she did not have her father to support her. She is on a search for a samurai who smells of sunflowers.

Mugen and Jin ditch Fuu at a fork in the road and wind up as members of rival yakuza gangs in a mob-controlled town, while Fuu winds up at the local brothel.
4 Hellhounds for Hire, Part 2 6/4/2005
The yakuza gang war reaches a boiling point, and one leader's true colors are revealed when his rival's son's life is on the line. Fuu escapes the brothel and becomes the dice roller in a bet for the fate of the town.
5 Artistic Anarchy 6/11/2005
The travelers must scrape together some money for boat fare. Fuu takes a job modeling for a budding young ukiyo-e artist whose paintings are a front for a kidnapping operation.
6 Stranger Searching 6/18/2005
After arriving in Edo, the travelers enter an eating contest, using their swords as their entry fee. They lose to a rogue Japan-obsessed foreigner who offers to give their swords back in return for a tour of the city.
7 A Risky Racket 6/25/2005
The travelers win some money gambling, but before they can use it to buy food it gets stolen by a pickpocket. Mugen and Jin hunt the thief down, while Fuu meets the young boy's sick mother.
8 The Art of Altercation 7/2/2005
A strange swordsman has been traveling around Edo searching for a samurai wearing glasses. He falls in love with Fuu at first sight, unaware that she's been traveling with the man he's looking for (and he's just had to pawn his glasses to buy food).
9 Beatbox Bandits 7/9/2005
The travelers are held at a notorious Edo checkpoint when they are sold counterfeit travel permits. Jin and Fuu are held as colateral while Mugen is sent to deliver a severed head to a renegade "tengu" clan to win their freedom.
