Story
Kagome Higurashi is an average Japanese junior high school girl who lives near her grandfather's shrine. On her fifteenth birthday, a demon pulls her into a well at the shrine, transporting her to feudal Japan, where warlords fight and demons run amok. She soon hears rumors that she is the reincarnation of a great warrior priestess Kikyo, who had the power to purify the Jewel of Four Souls, a magnificent magical gem with the power to boost the strength of anyone who wields it and could cause great calamity if placed in the wrong hands. She later meets a half-demon named Inu Yasha, whom Kikyo, who had fallen in love with him, bound to a tree fifty years ago while he was trying to steal the jewel. The story follows Inu Yasha and Kagome's quest to find the pieces of the jewel, which is accidentally shattered, and defeat a powerful demon named Naraku who seeks ultimate power, while meeting new friends and foes and slowly developing feelings for one another.
History
The Inu Yasha manga has been wildly popular in Japan since it made its debut in the Japanese comic magazine Shonen Sunday in 1996 and on Japanese television in October 2000. The anime ran for four years and 167 episodes and also spawned a number of spin-off movies, while the manga is still running to this day.
The series' popularity on American shores quickly rose after its premiere on [adult swim] in August 2002. Reruns of the series still play even after the final episode's premiere airing in October 2006.
