Story
The year is 2030. Technology has advanced to the point where human beings are fitted with cybernetic artificial body parts, blurring the line between man and machine. The Ghost in the Shell universe focuses on Public Security Section 9, a covert subdivision of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission which specializes in preventing cybercrime, headed by chief Daisuke Aramaki and second-in-command Major Motoko Kusanagi, herself using a mostly prosthetic body. It features various existential and philosophical viewpoints on identity in a world where humanity and technology have merged, often raised by the Tachikomas, Section 9's fleet of AI-suited armored tank units.
The series consists of two seasons of twenty-six episodes. Season one deals with Section 9's investigation of a government cover-up centered around a popular yet mysterious hacker, "The Laughing Man". Season two (titled Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG) takes place one year after season one and expands on the universe's backstory as Section 9 unravels a series of attacks by a group of terrorists known only as "The Individual Eleven".
