Plot

On December 31, 1999, Philip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy, was accidentally frozen in a cryogenic tube. He thaws out 1,000 years later to a world of flying cars, robots and aliens. He quickly lands a job at the Planet Express package delivery company headed by his many-times-great nephew Professor Hubert Farnsworth, with his new coworkers Bender, a robot with a very bad attitude and a bit of a drinking problem, and Leela, the one-eyed pilot of their delivery ship and the object of Fry’'s clumsy romantic overtures.

The name of the series comes from a pavilion designed by Norman Bel Geddes for the 1939 New York World's Fair, depicting his vision of what the world would look like twenty years in the future.

History

Futurama debuted on the Fox network in March 1999 and was a hit with viewers despite its erratic scheduling and frequent preemption for NFL coverage. It was finally canceled in 2003 after four production seasons, by which time [adult swim] picked up its broadcasting rights and premiered it in January of that year, coinciding with the block's expansion into weeknights.

In January 2008, Futurama moved to Comedy Central when [adult swim]'s contract with the show expired. Prior to this, most of the original staff returned to produce four direct-to-video Futurama movies which will be divided into half-hour episodes to air as the series' sixth season.
