Plot

Robert "Granddad" Freeman moves his two grandsons, ten-year-old black revolutionary Huey and eight-year-old gangsta Riley from Chicago's south side to the peaceful and predominantly white suburbs of Woodcrest. The Freemans individually adapt to the sudden change of atmosphere and all its eccentricities in stories which lampoon specific aspects of black culture and race relations.

The opening theme is performed by hip-hop artist Asheru.

History

The show has proved just as controversial as its comic strip origin, primarily for its persistent use of the word "n*gga" (even by a revived Martin Luther King in one episode, which was publicly denounced by Rev. Al Sharpton), which McGruder has defended for its common use in most African-American communities. Also, the episode "The Trial of R. Kelly" originally included a scene where civil rights icon Rosa Parks appears as a protester and is struck by a flying piece of chicken which was removed shortly after her death.

In January 2006, the series was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
