Plot
Paradigm City is known as “the city of amnesia”. Forty years ago a strange event occurred that erased the memories of everyone living there at that time. Beforehand, the city was known for creating giant robots known as Megadeuses as well as giant monsters that spawned from those days. Those born after that time have sought for those memories in order to create new threats. Roger Smith, known as the Negotiator, must protect Paradigm City from these robots and monsters with the help of his faithful butler, an android girl, and a giant Megadeus named The Big O. But as more clues and lost memories begin to surface, the fate of Paradigm City and its citizens may rest solely on the city’s top negotiator.
History
Big O originally debuted on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in April 2001. The series moved to [adult swim] in July 2003 where it was first broadcast uncut, in addition to which the network co-produced a second season of thirteen episodes which premiered in August of that year.
On October 26, 2003, the season finale, "The Show Must Go On", was scheduled to premiere, but due to a tape mix-up at Williams Street episode 20 was aired instead. The [adult swim] message boards were bombarded immediately afterward with angry responses from viewers, many of which were put on the air the following Thursday. The incident also coincided with a Halloween episode marathon and a webcam party, where one of the partygoers held up a sign saying "BIG O IS DISPLEASED" in reaction to the mix-up.
The network ran a public apology the following day and finally aired the episode on November 2, pushing back the premiere of the Family Guy lost episode "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" to the following Sunday.
[adult swim] currently has no plans to finance a third season.
